STARKVILLE -- The Clinton High School baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to the Starkville Yellowjackets in MHSAA Region 2-7A play Tuesday night at Carlisle Field on the campus of Starkville High School.
The loss eliminated the Arrows from postseason contention. With one district game remaining, Clinton's 3-6 region record can no longer catch Germantown, which sits at 5-4 in league play following its 3-2 loss to Oxford on Tuesday, nor Starkville, which secured its sixth district win with its victory over Clinton.
Clinton grabbed the early lead in the top of the third inning.
Wesley Warren kept the frame alive with a two-out single before
Ethan Dodson followed with a loud RBI single off the center-field wall to put the Arrows ahead 1-0.
The Arrows doubled their advantage in the fifth when
Chad Bates laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt to make it 2-0. Starkville answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on a two-out Clinton error to plate a pair of runs and even the score.
The Yellowjackets took control in the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits. The inning was highlighted by a three-run home run over the right-field wall.
Clinton was unable to mount a late rally as a double play and a groundout stalled the Arrows' comeback bid.
Brady Holmes turned in a strong start from Clinton, allowing four hits and two unearned runs over five innings. He struck out one and walked one.
The Arrows finished with five hits on the night. Warren led Clinton with two hits, while
Parker Barron, Holmes, and Dodson each added one.

Clinton returns home to host Starkville on Friday, April 10, at Arrow Baseball Field. First pitch for varsity is scheduled for 7 p.m.
