STARKVILLE -- The Clinton High School Men's Soccer team got ahead early and saw out a two-goal victory on Tuesday night.
Justin Singleton collected the game-winning goal and an assist as the Arrows (10-5-4) defeated the Starkville Yellowjackets 3-1 in the final game of the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Region 2-7A schedule.
Clinton's win put the team in the second spot of Region 2-7A and secured a home playoff game next Tuesday at Arrow Field. Clinton is set to host the Hernando Tigers, who are the third-seeded team out of Region 1-7A. Hernando ousted the red and black by 2-1 score during the second round of last season's MHSAA Class 7A Playoffs.
Singleton opened the scoring with his header that he redirected towards goal after the ball caromed off the cross bar.
Bradley Wells doubled Clinton's advantage in the 30th minute, but Starkville cut the lead back to one only three minutes later when the Arrows scored an own goal.
In the second half,
Wes Ambrose gave the Arrows the necessary cushion when he broke free on a Singleton through ball. The junior deftly poked the ball past the Yellowjacket keeper in the one-on-one situation.
