In a gritty, low-scoring defensive battle that extended into overtime, the Clinton High School Lady Arrows emerged victorious with a 30-27 win on Friday night at Arrow Gym. The Lady Arrows improved to 4-2 in District 2-7A play and 17-5 overall after defeating the Lady Mavericks for the second time this season. It was the third straight win for Clinton in district action.
Throughout the game, the Lady Arrows focused on moving the ball along the perimeter, working to generate ball movement and execute a motion offense. They opened the game with a 5-0 run, forcing Germantown to call an early timeout to regroup.
Germantown's Charlie Gamberine seemed unstoppable in the first half, scoring all 17 of the Mavericks' points, including an impressive 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Lady Arrows countered with a balanced offensive effort, as five players contributed to the scoring column. The Lady Mavericks led 17-14 as the teams went to the locker rooms.
The Lady Arrows came out energized in the second half. Eyana McKinley sparked the momentum, converting a putback. Although McKinley missed a potential game-winning shot in regulation with just 1.5 seconds remaining, the team didn't let that setback shake their confidence.
In overtime, the Lady Arrows' defense rose to the occasion, successfully neutralizing Gamberine and holding the Mavericks scoreless in the extra period. Their tenacious defensive effort secured a hard-fought victory.
Jatoi Johnson, who finished with a team-high 13 rebounds, knocked down the game-winning free throw early in the overtime period, and Aria Jones, who scored a team-high 11 points, gave the Lady Arrows their three-point cushion.
