Owen Coker's second-half brace proved the difference as the Clinton High School Men's Soccer team defeated the Germantown Mavericks 3-2 in a Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Region 2-7A game at Arrow Field on Tuesday night. The important victory improved the Arrows' overall record to 8-4-4 and their regional record to 2-3, raising postseason-berth ambitions.
Starting the night in Region 2-7A's cellar,
Juan Parades scored the game's opener when the Clinton midfielder pounced on the Germantown goalkeeper's loose save, driving his shot into the back of the next in the 21st minute. It was Parades' first touch of the match when he scored. However, the visiting Mavericks answered right before halftime for a 1-1 scoreline at the intermission.
Six minutes out of the locker room,
Justin Singleton, a senior, finished his speedy dribble with a lay-off pass to Coker, who was outside the 18-yard box. The junior midfielder did the rest as he placed his shot past the Germantown goalie in the 46th minute.
Singleton and Coker would link up once more when Singleton drew a foul inside the Mavericks' 18-yard box and earned a penalty kick for the Arrows in the 49th minute. With the foul on Singleton, Coker's spot kick was successful.
Germantown answered the Arrows' two-goal flurry to make a nervy finish down the stretch, but it was not enough to send the game to extra time.
