CLINTON -- Ethan Dodson fouled off the first two pitches he saw in Tuesday night's final at-bat. On the third pitch, Dodson's bat sparked a frantic conclusion to the MHSAA Region 2-7A opener between the Clinton Arrows and Germantown Mavericks at Arrow Baseball Field.

Tied at 5-5 and the bases loaded, Dodson grounded into a fielder's choice to the mound as Tate Farmer recorded the out at home. Ashton Rayburn's throw from home plate, in an attempt to turn a double play, was low and off the mark, allowing Parker Burrow to cross home with the winning run and lift the Arrows to a 6-5 victory in eight innings.

With the triumph, Clinton improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 2-7A play.

Germantown briefly seized the advantage in the top of the eighth when Rayburn delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Mavericks a 5-4 lead. Clinton answered immediately in the bottom half as David Steelman lined an RBI single into right field to knot the contest and set up the decisive sequence late in the frame.

Gage Temple earned the win for Clinton, hurling 3 1/3 innings of relief while allowing three hits and one run. The junior right-hander struck out three and walked one.

The Arrows finished with nine hits on the night. Chad Bates and Dodson each powered through two hits, while Parker Barron, Steelman, and Bates each drove in one run.

Clinton struck first when balk brought home the game's first run in the first. Bates singled to center field, making the score 2-0 in the second.

Germantown answered in the third, tying the game on a triple and an Arrow error. Stone Crain put Clinton back in front in the bottom half with a RBI double for a 3-2 advantage.

The Mavericks grabbed a 4-3 advantage in the fifth with a single and a sacrifice fly, but Barron responded later in the frame with a single to even the score.
