CLINTON -- The Clinton High School Women's Basketball team picked up a critical MHSAA Region 2-7A victory Tuesday night, edging the Germantown Lady Mavericks, 31-26, at Arrow Gym.
The Lady Arrows knocked down four first-half 3-pointers to build a five-point cushion by halftime, then sealed the win by shooting 80 percent from the free-throw line over the final two quarters. The win improved Clinton's district record to 4-5, completed the regular-season sweep of Germantown, and pushed the Lady Arrows' overall record to 14-11.
Kayland Ellis sparked Clinton early, drilling three 3-pointers in the first half as the Lady Arrows opened a 19-8 advantage by the break. Germantown answered with a surge out of the locker room, stringing together a 10-3 run in the third to trim the deficit to 22-18.
Clinton, however, was advantageous of their chances from the foul line. The Lady Arrows knocked down nine of 12 free throws down the stretch. Combined with a locked-in defensive effort, the Lady Arrows were able to shut the door on any late comeback attempt.
Grace Eatmon led Clinton with 10 points, including a steady six-of-eight performance from the free-throw line.
Aria Jones and
Aniyla Cavett each chipped in six points.
