MADISON -- The Clinton High School Women's Soccer team delivered when it mattered most Friday night, leaning on standout performances from senior
Kayla Jones and junior
Ellyn Burchfield in a pivotal MHSAA Region 2-7A match.
Jones recorded a hat trick and Burchfield notched her 10th shutout this season, making several key saves, as Clinton blanked the Madison Central Lady Jaguars, 3-0, at Jaguar Stadium.
Joelle Ambrose dished out two assists, and
Elise Thomas added another assist as the Lady Arrows improved their district record to 6-2 and 11-3-3 overall.
Burchfield and the Clinton back line, anchored by
Taylor Robinson and
Cate Thompson, weathered several early Madison Central attacking flurries before Jones broke the deadlock late in the first half. The attacking midfielder slipped in front of the Lady Jaguar goalie, kept the ball in play at the end line, and finished an Ambrose setup to give Clinton a 1-0 lead at the 29th minute, which held through halftime.
Clinton doubled its advantage 17 minutes after the break when Thomas threaded a pass between the defensive line to Jones. Her initial attempt was saved, but Jones stayed with the play and tucked home the rebound for her second of the night. Moments later, Burchfield maintained the two-goal cushion with a diving save off a Lady Jaguar corner in the 67th minute.
Jones sealed the result in the 77th minute, racing onto another perfectly weighted Ambrose pass to complete the hat trick and cap the scoring.
