The Clinton High School Baseball team found itself in a hole. Eyeing the final three games of MHSAA Division 2-7A, the Arrows were sitting on the outside of the postseason -- potentially seeing their season end early.
An 8-3 win over Madison Central High School on Friday, April 4, lifted the Arrows to decide their playoff fate. Then, on Tuesday night, Clinton seized full control against the Tupelo Golden Wave.
Both teams were strong on the bump, but the Arrows'
Parker Burrow provided four and two-thirds innings of one-run baseball,
Brody Zumbro slammed the door shut in relief, and the Arrows defeated the Golden Wave, 2-1, at Arrow Field.
"All year, I knew the biggest thing about this team was their heart and the way they play," Clinton Head Baseball Coach Sam Temple said. "When you're backed against the wall, it's all about heart, and just truly proud of them -- the way they've come out and believed in each other."
Burrow started the game and collected 14 outs, earning the win for Clinton. The right-handed freshman scattered three hits and allowed one run. Zumbro secured the save in two and one-third innings, striking out two and walking none. The senior allowed two hits.
"Parker is going to be really special," Temple said. "He's done a great job as a starter and reliever. At this point, it is all about throwing strikes, and anytime you're left-handed pitcher, that can be tough for the opposing team. He's getting a lot of great experience for his future.
"
Brody Zumbro's performance was special, too," Temple added. "A senior that comes in and closes out the game. (Zumbro) had the hot hand tonight in relief."
Stone Crain and
Ethan Dodson were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup.
Ryan Saxton, Crain, and Dodson each collected one of the three hits for the Arrows.
Clinton opened the scoring in the first after Crain doubled, scoring one run. Dodson doubled down the left field line in the third, adding the eventual winning run.
Dayne Wray batted the Golden Wave's one run in during the fourth.
UP NEXT
Clinton plays the second game of the Division 2-7A series against Tupelo at 5 p.m. on Friday in Tupelo. The Arrows return home for a non-division game against St. Andrew's at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. for junior varsity and varsity, respectively.
