The Clinton High School Baseball team could not complete a late-inning rally, falling to the Starkville Yellowjackets, 6-5, on Wednesday night at Arrow Baseball Field.
Starkville got on the board in the top of the first inning after Lucian Walker singled down the right-field line, Bradley Cohen hit a sacrifice fly, and Kaden Wilson walked, each scoring one run.
The Yellowjackets added one run in the third. Zay Spencer singled to right field on a 0-2 count, making the score 4-1.
Tyrese Haggard mashed a three-run double to center field, tying the game at four in the bottom half of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Starkville broke up the tie when Jonas Coleman doubled, scoring on run. Then a walk by Spencer followed to extend the lead to 6-4.
Clinton pulled a run back when
Parker Thames singled to center field, scoring
Wesley Warren from third base, in the sixth. However, during the seventh, the Arrows went down in order.
Wes Ambrose delivered four innings of relief for the Arrows. The junior gave up two runs (none earned), striking out seven and walking three.
Brady Holmes took the loss for Clinton.
Chad Bates led Clinton from the batter's box with two hits in four at bats from the leadoff position. Haggard went 1-for-3 at the plate and led the team with three runs batted in.
