The Clinton High School Baseball team had its backs against the wall against the Germantown Mavericks in a divisional game on Friday night.
With two outs, the Arrows kept their composure at the plate and exploded for a four-run rally during the bottom of the sixth inning en route to an 8-5 win over the Mavericks in a Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Division 2-7A game at Arrow Baseball Field. The win places Clinton with a 1-3 divisional record with four more games to play against divisional opponents (Madison Central and Tupelo).
Ethan Dodson, who was 4-for-4 at the plate against Germantown, doubled on a line drive to right field, scoring the tying run with two outs. Then,
Stone Crain and
Tyrese Haggard reached on walks, loading the bases.
David Steelman was plunked by a pitch, driving in the go-ahead run. With the stage set,
Parker Thames delivered a double into center field that plated two runs for Clinton's three-run lead.
Brody Zumbro earned the win for Clinton. The pitcher shut the door when he took over pitching duties on the mound during the sixth inning. Zumbro allowed three hits but no runs, striking out one and walking none.
Parker Burrow started on the bump, surrendering four runs and four hits over three innings, striking out four and walking one.
Brady Holmes tossed one frame of shutout baseball for the Arrows.
Clinton amassed 12 hits in the game.
The Arrows opened the scoring in the second after
Josef Walker singled, plating a run. Germantown grabbed the lead in the next frame after Brayden Quick, Germantown's leadoff batter, tripled to center field, and Jackson Estes doubled to left, each scoring a run.
Clinton regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. A Germantown error and Thames' sacrifice fly, each scored a run.
Germantown made the score 5-3 when John Riley North grounded out, scoring one run, and Quick singled, scoring a pair of Mavericks, during the fourth.
