The Clinton High School Baseball team had to wait for its first complete game of the 2025 regular season.
After Pearl canceled due to illness on Thursday and Friday night's game against Florence was halted due to lightning, the wait was worth its while for the Arrows on a breezy Saturday afternoon.
Ethan Dodson, Clinton's three-hole hitter, raked in four runs on two hits,
Tyrese Haggard collected the season's first win on the mound, and Clinton run-ruled the Newton County Cougars 15-5 in four and one-half innings at Clinton High School.
Haggard was tagged with the win. He surrendered two hits and one run over one and two-third innings, walking only one Cougar.
Senior
Jack Grove started on the mound for the Arrows. The hurler allowed six hits and four runs (three earned) over two and one-third innings.
Phillip Burchfield threw one frame of zero-run ball to close out the game. The righty allowed no hits, striking out three.
Clinton accumulated 12 hits against Newton County.
Josef Walker,
David Steelman, Dodson, and Haggard each collected two hits on the afternoon. Overall, the Arrows showed immense patience at the place, tallying seven walks. Walker led the squad with two walks.
Walker and Bates each stole multiple bases as the Arrows ran wild on the base paths, amassing five stolen bases.
The Arrows got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after
Chad Bates scored after tagging up, and
Stone Crain hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.
Clinton added five runs on four thits in the bottom of the second inning. Dodson doubled, scoring two runs, Crain singled, scoring one run, Steelman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Haggard singled, scoring another.
A single by Dodson, and a double by Steelman helped Clinton extend their early lead in the third, 11-4.
UP NEXT
Clinton participates in the Mid-Mississippi Classic this upcoming Friday and Saturday. The Arrows will host Ridgeland High School at 7 p.m. on Friday and Senatobia High School at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Both games' location is Arrow Baseball Field on the campus of Clinton High School.
