STARKVILLE -- The Clinton High School Men's Basketball team furiously rallied in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Starkville Yellowjackets' double-digit lead on Tuesday night.
Jakobe Cavett scored 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Arrows trimmed their deficit to six points before Starkville pulled away with its 55-45 victory at Starkville High School. The loss dropped Clinton's overall record to 10-8 and its MHSAAÂ District 2-7A record to 1-2.
After the Cavett's stellar fourth-quarter performance, the senior guard completed his night with a game-high 26 points, which included six 3-pointers.
Four of the long-range makes occurred in the final period as Clinton tried to overcome the Yellowjackets' 43-30 advantage that the hosts built in the third. Cavett knocked down four consecutive 3-pointers, including one from the NBA-range, that got Clinton within six points, 48-42, with two minutes, 30 seconds remaining. However, Starkville outpaced the red and black 7-3 in the game's closing moments.
Shiloh Freeman scored his 11 points during the opening two quarters. Freeman scored three 3-pointers and a first-quarter lay-up in transition as Clinton and Starkville were tied 23-23 at the break.
