The Lady Arrows Soccer program got their 2023-2024 season off to a strong start Friday night and Saturday morning with a 3-0 win over Biloxi and a 0-0 draw with Ocean Springs.
On Friday night, the Lady Arrows dominated all 80 minutes of action with 2 goals in the first half and a goal to cap the scoring after halftime. Sophomore
Kayla Jones tallied 2 goals in the opener and Senior
Mia Card scored a goal as well. Assists by Senior
Lauren Warner, Sophomore
Ruby Acy, and Senior
Zoie Zumbro propelled the Lady Arrows to a solid opening win.
Head Coach Elliot Rimmer said of his team's opening win, "It's always good to open the season with a win, and while there is plenty of rust still to knock off, we also saw a lot of positives to build on. Kayla obviously will be huge for us this year going forward, and for her to score twice to open the season is a great sign, and our back line and Sarah keeping the clean sheet shows that we are sticking true to who we are as a program and defending well."
The Lady Arrows had a short turnaround in a morning kickoff against a good Ocean Springs team on Saturday morning. Senior Goalkeeper
Sarah Polk kept another clean sheet in the second game as well. The Lady Arrows created a few scoring opportunities, but the score remained 0-0 at the final whistle.
Rimmer said of the opening weekend, "Good opening weekend against two quality teams in Biloxi and Ocean Springs. Had some good chances today to win the game but didn't put them away, and playing against a good team like Ocean Springs you have to capitalize on the few chances you get. Ocean Springs is a quality team that has a great chance to come out of the south so it was good to see them in action in the regular season. Another shutout against a good attack is exactly what we want to see from our defense, so that's something we can build on going into a tough home stand vs Oak Grove and Brandon."
The Lady Arrows open their home slate this Tuesday, November 7 at 5:30 PM at Arrow Field.
