A chance encounter led to a special guest speaker for the Clinton High School Football team on Wednesday morning.
Two-time NFL Super Bowl champion Malcolm Butler spoke to the team in the CHS Cafeteria during the school's homeroom period. Surrounded by eager listeners, Butler, who is famously known for his game-winning interception for the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, spoke to the players about taking advantage of every opportunity, seizing the day, and staying consistent.
"I am a 601, 662, Mississippi guy until the day I die, and I love the game, and I love motivating young people," Butler said after his speech. "I love pushing people to push themselves harder. It's a beautiful thing.
"When you show love to others, you get love back."
How Butler ended up in front of the Arrows was something of a well-timed situation.
Joining his son's class for a field trip to the CHS culinary class on Tuesday, Butler's curiosity was piqued about CHS and wanted to see more of the facilities. A stop at the front office led to the former corner back meeting CHS Assistant Principal Leonard Taylor and Clinton Athletics Director Judd Boswell. A conversation sparked up and the suggestion was made that Butler speak to the team, which has started its season with two straight wins.
"Go attack the day and do that every day for yourself, teammates, and coaches," Butler said in his speech to the Arrows.
"It only takes one play, one opportunity," Butler added in his closing remarks."
Butler performed a question-and-answer session after his opening comments, taking on a myriad of questions asked about his career and mindset toward football and life.
Butler currently coaches at St. Thomas High School in Houston, Texas. Prior to coaching, Butler took advantage of one season at Vicksburg High School to launch a football career with collegiate stops at Hinds Community College and the University of West Alabama. Then, Butler, an undrafted free agent, played for the Patriots, winning Super Bowls XLIX and LI with the organization, and the Tennessee Titans along with an opportunity at the Arizona Cardinals.
