The Clinton High School Men's Basketball team staved off a Pearl Pirates' comeback to claim a 64-60 win on Friday night at A.E. Woods Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College. The Arrows and the Pirates played the final game of Friday's eight-game schedule at the third annual "Being A Successful Student Athlete" (BA$$A) Holiday Invitational.
Even though the game tipped off well past 10 p.m.,
Jakobe Cavett was wide awake, scoring a game-high 31 points. The guard made 10-out-18 field goals, including four out of eight from beyond the 3-point arc. Cavett was named the game's "Most Valuable Player".
Logan Garner elevated the Arrows from the post position with his eight points and 10 rebounds.
Jaden Moody chipped in seven points, and
Jamari Young added six points. Off the bench,
Javarius Tyler added six points.
Cavett knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer before halftime, which gave the Arrows a 29-27 advantage. Then, Clinton left the locker room red hot as it entered the third quarter. The Arrows would push its advantage to 15 points -- their largest of the game -- during second half's first eight minutes. Moody chipped in his six points, Cavett added five, and Young scored four of his seven as the Arrows outscored the Pirates 19-7 for a 48-34 advantage.
Despite their slow start to the second half, the Pirates utilized a 15-4 run to cut the Arrows' lead to four points by the fourth's 1:35 mark, 57-53.
With the furious rally under way, the Arrows would not let the lead slip from their grasp. Moody knocked down one of two free-throw attempts, and Garner rocked the rim with a two-handed dunk out of transition. The red and black's response pushed the score to 60-53 with 48 seconds remaining.
Pearl outpaced Clinton 7-4 down the stretch, but Cavett, the man of the night, iced the game with his final four, successful foul shots.
