JACKSON -- Clinton High School senior
Sarah Blake Thompson did not have the most ideal start to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 7A Girls' Golf Tournament.
However, Thompson showed up on the tournament's second day to help the Lady Arrows move up two spots from ninth place on the first day and secure a top 10 finish on Tuesday at Patrick Farms Golf Club.
"Sarah Blake was a huge difference today, going from 101 to 86," Head Golf Coach Clay Norton said. "It was one of those deals where Sarah Blake wanted to make an impact with her last high school golf opportunity. She played relaxed and played very good golf today."
With Thompson's 86 and
Ellyn Burchfield's solid two rounds, shooting a 168 total, the Lady Arrows placed seventh in the state championship. It is the fourth consecutive top 10 finish for the Lady Arrows in the MHSAA's highest classification state golf tournament.
"I am extremely proud and happy with our performance yesterday and today," Norton said. " We played great considering where we are as a team. They did a really good job of chasing the other team down. We could have taken it easy today, but we went after it to finish seventh. I am very happy with that (mentality)."
Burchfield, a sophomore, led the Lady Arrows in both rounds. The lefty shot a first-round 83 and a second-round 85, finishing 15th place on the individual leaderboard. Burchfield collected two birdies and 14 pars in 36 holes.
Thompson's improved second round helped the senior place 23rd overall. Thompson shot seven-over on the front nine and stayed consistent on the back nine, helping her shoot the 86 that moved her into the top 25 position.
Laney Mitchell assisted the Lady Arrows reach the ninth place as she carded a 96 on Monday. Mitchell carded four pars that helped Clinton solidify the spot after the first day. The sophomore ended the tournament as the 33rd overall finisher.
Kasey Pigg shot a 194 total over the two days, which earned her a 29th place finish as an individual. Pigg collected six pars in 36 holes. The junior improved four strokes during the second day, shooting a 95 at Patrick Farms.
