STARKVILLE -- Cailyn Willis drove in two runs,
Jaelyn Gholar collected a team-high three hits,
Madison Nelson controlled the Lady Jackets inside the circle, and the Clinton High School softball team erupted for eight runs in the third inning en route to a 12-1 victory over Starkville in Region 2-7A action Tuesday night at Starkville High School.
With the run-rule triumph, the Lady Arrows completed the season sweep of Starkville after claiming an 11-10 victory in the first meeting on March 19 in Clinton. Clinton improved to 6-1 in district play and 13-10 overall.
Nelson worked all five innings in the circle for Clinton. The right-hander allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out and walking three.
The Lady Arrows finished with 13 hits in the win. Willis and Nelson each drove in two runs, while Clinton also swiped five bags.
Keelyn Constancio led off the game with a double and later scored on Willis' sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the first inning. Starkville answered in the bottom half, tying the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly of its own.
Clinton broke the game open with an eight-run third inning to build a 9-1 lead. The outburst was fueld by Nelson's two-run single,
Anna Raines' sacrifice bunt that brought home a run, and
Madison Rhodes' RBI triple. Four Starkville errors in the inning also helped the Lady Arrows plate four runs.
Mia Thrailkill added an RBI sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning, and
Kaelyn Thames lined an RBI single into right field in a two-run fifth inning.
UP NEXT
The Lady Arrows return home Thursday, April 9, to host Madison Central in another Region 2-7A contest at CHS. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
Clinton won the first meeting against the Lady Jaguars, 21-11, on March 24 in Madison.
Thursday's game will also serve as Clinton Park Night and Clinton Softball Organization Night.
