CLINTON -- The Clinton High School softball team overcame an early three-run deficit and outlasted Madison Central, 8-5, in an MHSAA Region 2-7A matchup Thursday night on the CHS campus.
Jaelyn Gholar drove in five runs on three hits, while the Lady Arrows backed
Presleigh Burrow's complete-game effort with superb defense.
The win improved Clinton to 7-1 in league play and 14-10 overall.
Madison Central plated three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning. Gholar sparked the Lady Arrows' response, driving in two runs with a two-out single.
Clinton seized control with a four-run third inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Cailyn Willis delivered an RBI single, while Gholar added two more RBIs and later scored on a passed ball during the rally.
Gholar extended the lead to four runs in the fifth with a single to right field.
The Lady Jaguars answered with a two-run home run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-5, but
Madison Rhodes responded with an RBI single to push the advantage back to three runs.
Willis collected two hits and stole three bases, highlighting a balanced offensive night that produced seven total hits.
Burrow scattered eight hits and worked out of several jams, striking out one and walking two.

Clinton travels to Puckett for a non-region matchup against the Lady Wolves on Friday, April 10. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Arrows return to region play on Tuesday, April 14, traveling to Gluckstadt to face the Germantown Lady Mavericks.
