The Lady Arrows Softball team opened their 2024 campaign on a beautiful Tuesday night at Arrow Field with an 8-4 win over the Florence Lady Eagles. The win pushes the Lady Arrows' record to 1-0 on the season.
The Lady Arrows plated 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning on an RBI from Mackenzie Coole and an RBI double from
Destiny Funchess.
The Lady Eagles tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning before the Lady Arrows responded on another RBI hit from Funchess and a SAC Fly from
Hayden-Leigh Holifield to make the score 4-2.
The Lady Eagles again knotted the score in the top of the 5th on a 2-run home run over the left field wall. The Lady Arrows again responded immediately in the bottom of the 5th when Cooley hammered a pitch over the left field to give the Lady Arrows a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Arrows added to their lead with an RBI single from
Keelyn Constancio, a passed ball, and a double to center field off the bat of
Madison Nelson to bring the score to its 8-4 final.
At the plate for the Lady Arrows, Constancio led the way with 3 hits, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI.
Estrella Constancio added 2 more hits including a double, and scored 2 runs. Cooley and Funchess had 2 RBI apiece as well.
In the circle for the Lady Arrows,
Ashlen Albritton earned the win, throwing 7 innings, giving up 5 hits, 4 runs, and 1 strikeout.
Head Coach Rachel Hurley said of her team's season opener, "We definitely found out what we were made of tonight. Florence is a team that never quits for 7 innings straight. I'm proud of how we didn't give up and found ways to score runs and be productive. Our defense came up huge in clutch moments every time they needed to and we competed on both sides of the ball. We had a lot of clutch hits when we needed them, and all the way through the lineup everyone did their job. It's always great to start the season off with the year but the hard work and expectations don't stop here, we've got a long season ahead but I'm proud of the strong start."
The Lady Arrows return to action on Thursday night as they host the Vikings of Warren Central at 5 and 6:30 PM.
